SSI Swim Instructor Training

At Fishlike Swim University, we’re excited to partner with Swim Schools International (SSI), to offer comprehensive and high-quality certification programs for swim coaches. Whether you’re new to swimming, or an experienced swimmer looking to harness your passion, our programs will equip you with all the necessary skills and techniques you need to teach various age groups and levels of swimmers.

SSI is an internationally recognized institute with a structured curriculum for all ages of swimmers. Our certification programs will train you to teach based on their methodology and syllabus, so you can confidently offer swimming lessons to both kids and adults.

WHY COACH?

A supremely rewarding form of work

Being a swim coach is a fun, healthy and meaningful way to supplement your existing work or even make a career switch. You’ll make enjoyable connections with others, and experience the satisfaction of seeing your students progress and gain mastery in the water. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of witnessing your student finish their first lap, set a new personal best, or simply put together all the elements of a stroke for the first time.

Flexible hours and job support

Swim coaching is also the ultimate kind of flexible work—you choose when and where you can offer sessions, and there’s always demand from students because swimming is an essential life skill as well as a sport. Plus, as SSI’s partner institution, when you complete the certification, we at Fishlike will offer you a part-time coaching position right away, so you don’t have to worry about getting students or marketing yourself.

WHO

We’re looking for people who love being in water, and are good communicators—that’s all you need to begin your journey towards certifying as a swim instructor.

If you want to teach adults or older kids, swimming proficiency in certain strokes is also required (see the prerequisites with each program below).

HOW IT WORKS

We offer three programs, based on the target audience you want to teach:

  1. Baby & Toddler: learning to teach kids between 6mo and 3yo.
  2. Kids L1 & L2: learning to teach kids up to 15 yo
  3. Adult: learning to teach anyone aged 18+

Each program includes:

  • a classroom portion, where you learn the theory behind swimming and teaching
  • a pool portion, where you start to apply the theory and learn teaching techniques hands-on with other trainees
  • an apprenticeship, where you attach with a senior coach as they teach real students

Programs usually take place in modules of 1-2 days at a time, so that you can easily fit it in to your schedule. Each program has a different number of training hours, so check below for the details.

In order to qualify as an instructor, you’ll also need to complete safety training (CPR, AED and lifesaving), which is covered in SSI’s React Right program.
